Fall Cinema Symposium

Wednesday October 19th at 7 pm

CENSORSHIP!!! How would you like it if someone else decided what you should “see” or “hear” at the movies? This illustrated talk by Cinema Professor Ted McKosky examines some of the images that brought about the Motion Picture Code, the changes it sparked and reasons for its demise. Be advised this is intended for mature audiences and presents material that was at one time (and may still be?) considered controversial. Also, be forewarned some of this is pretty silly, so if you can’t handle silly…

November 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th at 8:00pm

Sand Mountain Matchmaking focuses on the courtship travails of a serious-minded young widow while in Why the Lord Come to Sand Mountain, two circuit-riding preachers, The Lord and St. Peter, seek shelter with a mountain man, his common law wife and their fourteen children. A few jugs of moonshine later The Lord persuades his hosts to tell him a story. Their simple tale is not only touching but transforming. These two interrelated plays of life in the Tennessee Mountains by Romulus Linney make for an evening of warmth and laughter.

Spring Cinema Symposium

Thursday January 19th at 7pm

Our Spring Cinema Symposium returns to those thrilling days of yesteryear to present Buster Keaton’s classic tale of life on the Mississippi, Steamboat Bill Jr. Accompanying the film with their original score is the musical group Boister. Boister’s silent film scores have won widespread praise from critics such as Roger Ebert and the Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday. Seeing a silent film this way as it was originally screened with live musical accompaniment provides access to this art form in a way impossible by any other means. This event is suitable for the entire family and, of course, no one will want to miss one of the most incredible stunts ever recorded on film!

A seedy lecture hall in Paris, 1899, provides the stage for this fictional final lecture by that renowned talker and “first media star” Irish wit and dramatist, Oscar Wilde. RU Theatre Professor Wesley Young portrays the famed writer in this play which highlights the gems of Wilde’s spoken words while unmasking the poignancy of the man behind the scandal.

The Fourth may be past but the fireworks are far from over when a group of college friends gather at the Talley family farm against the backdrop of the Independence Day celebration. Ken Talley, a legless Vietnam veteran, is at the center of this bittersweet reunion which includes his sister June, her precocious teen-age daughter, a pill-popping heiress, her husband and an eccentric aunt who has come to scatter her husband’s ashes at the homestead. This sharply funny play by American playwright Lanford Wilson explores the pain of shattered dreams and the human struggle to cope with loss.
