The Radford University Department of Theatre and Cinema is pleased to offer two Scholarships for entering Freshmen: the Nancy Necessary Pridemore and the GeorgAnne Voland Buck Scholarships. These scholarships target talented students with a strong academic background.

There are three named scholarships for upper class students: the Kim Fiola Alpha Psi Omega, the Dr. James W. Hawes and the Mah/Stone Scholarships. These are awarded annually, in addition to other Arts Society Scholarships.

The Department also offers approximately 20 Work Study Scholarships for students who participate in the Costume, Scenery, Lighting, Sound or Box Office Management.

With Arts Society and Work Study Scholarships, over 55% of our majors receive some form of financial support.

The Kim Fiola Alpha Psi Omega, Dr. James W. Hawes and Mah/Stone Scholarships are awarded to outstanding upper class (sophomore and above) theatre and cinema majors who demonstrate a high commitment to the theatrical and cinematic arts through scholarship and participation in departmental productions and activities. While the amount of the awards for these scholarships vary, last year we were able to award $1,650 to each of our scholarship recipients. Upper class students who would like more information on how to be considered for these scholarships should contact the Chair of the Scholarship Committee.

The Nancy Necessary Pridemore and GeorgAnne Voland Buck Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen who plan to major and participate in the Department of Theatre and Cinema. These students represent the best of the entering class who have excelled in their theatrical pursuits prior to deciding to come to Radford University.

The Nancy Necessary Pridemore Scholar must have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) and combined SATs of 1100 (or higher) or an ACT of 24 (or higher.) The student must demonstrate an outstanding level of achievement in theatre and cinema through the presentation of an audition or portfolio to be eligible to compete. This scholarship will include a $2,000 award toward tuition. Pridemore Scholars who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA at Radford University, good conduct and continue to demonstrate an outstanding level of achievement as a Radford University theatre and cinema major will be eligible to renew this scholarship for three additional years.

Incoming freshmen are eligible for the GeorgAnne Voland Buck Theatre & Cinema Scholarship. To qualify, the student must demonstrate an outstanding level of achievement and submit a letter detailing their desire to pursue their education in the field of theatre and cinema. While the amount of this award varies, last year we were able to award $1,700 to our scholarship recipient.

In order to be considered for the Nancy Necessary Pridemore or the GeorgAnne Voland Buck Scholarship, students must complete an application for admission to Radford University by January 23rd of the senior year. We will send a scholarship packet requesting essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts and a listing of extracurricular activities, community service, honors and awards to all qualifying applicants. Selected finalists will participate in an interview process at RU.

Upper class (sophomore and above) theatre and cinema majors may also compete for departmental Arts Society scholarships by demonstrating a high commitment to the theatrical and cinematic arts through scholarship and participation in departmental productions and activities. Last year we were able to award $1000 scholarships to help six theatre and cinema majors meet their academic goals. Upper class students who would like more information on how to be considered for these scholarships should contact the Chair of the Scholarship Committee.

The department offers Work Study Scholarships each year. These range from working on stage to providing support for the scenic, lighting, sound, box office and front of house areas. Upper class students who would like more information on how to be considered for these scholarships should contact the Technical Director of the Department of Theatre and Cinema.

There are many opportunities for students at Radford University to get financial help to meet their academic goals. We encourage our students to contact the RU Foundation for information about scholarships outside the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts and the RU Office of Financial Aid for other possibilities.
