For The October 2008 Production of

On the Verge, Or The Geography of Yearning
by Eric Overmyer

Rehearsals begin Sept. 7, Show runs October 10-18

When: Tuesday, September 2 at 7 pm & Wednesday, September 3 beginning at 6:30 pm

It is preferred that actors audition on Tuesday night. Actors who cannot attend the first night can still present their monologue from 6:30-7:30 pm on Wednesday, September 3rd and will be eligible for callbacks, but may not get to read. Callbacks will begin at 7:30 pm on Wednesday.

Where: Pridemore Playhouse (Porterfield Hall)

Please bring: a memorized 60-SECOND COMEDIC MONOLOGUE. The monologue should be high-energy and show off your versatility, comedic ability, and verbal skill as much as possible. Following the monologue, all actors auditioning Tuesday will be able to participate in cold readings from the script. Please wear comfortable clothing/shoes as you may also be asked to ballroom dance. Please bring along a headshot/resume if you have one and your schedule for the semester.

Please take the time to read the play before auditioning. If you cannot locate a library copy or purchase one from dramaticpublishing.com, please email the director, Jennifer Juul, at jjuul@radford.edu about checking out a copy from the department. This play is a vocabulary treasure trove; actors who have looked up the unfamiliar terms and know how to pronounce them will have an advantage. (What’s a palanquin? Who was Robert Lowell? Have fun finding out! Geeks rule!)**

All students are welcome to audition regardless of major. Theatre and Cinema majors who are emphasizing Performance are expected to attend auditions for all productions as part of the professional training.**

Monologue Advice: On the Verge is a whimsical comedy, so choose audition material that allows you to play charismatically within that style. Embrace your wacky and spontaneous side, but don’t force it—even the zaniest comedy still has a hint of truth. If you are a new RU student, it’s OK if you need to bring a copy of your monologue onstage with you. If you don’t currently have a piece in this style, check out the most recent comedic one-act plays that have been published. Go to the library, not the internet.

Character Breakdown & Descriptions: This play is about our ability to express what’s in our wildest imaginings. All of the characters in On the Verge play a lot with words. They are highly intelligent, funny, spirited, and extremely stubborn. This show needs actors who learn quickly and can communicate the meaning of the dialogue just like Shakespeare’s actors had to tell the story—using their voices and bodies without the help of realistic scenery or even, in many cases, a common vocabulary.

Fanny: An intrepid trekker. Fanny is individualistic but practical. She has a razor wit and yet still remains in many ways the ideal Victorian lady. Hers is a journey of the heart. *callbacks will include a dance audition*

Mary: I would trust Mary with my life. Seasoned and brave, Mary has no qualms about growing older and is one tough bird. Hers is a journey of the soul.

Alex: The youngest and most open-minded of the explorers. Alex is unafraid of experimenting, speaking her mind, and having a good time. She is dazzling, bright, and ingenuous. Hers is a journey of wild imaginings.

Grover et al: One actor plays Grover, Alphonse, the Gorge Troll, the Yeti, Gus, Madame Nhu, Mr. Coffee, and Nicky Paradise. Seeking an extremely versatile actor with physical comedy skills and an ear for dialects. *callbacks will include a dance audition*
